In 2004 local residents of Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County came together to reorganize the local branch of the NAACP. Forming in response to a complaint of racism, the group quickly reorganized to offer assistance. From 2004 until now, NAACP Branch #7132 has worked along side of community organizations, local government, school boards, and law enforcement to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.
The regular January 21 meeting of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County NAACP Branch #7132 is cancelled to allow members to participate in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events on that day, such as those held at Bridgewater College including a talk by world-renowned writer Nikki Giovanni at 7:30 p.m. Check the College website for the schedule.
MLK events are held at JMU, as well as EMU acknowledging the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These events are all day at most colleges.
Regular branch meetings will resume on the third Monday of each month at 6 pm on Feb. 18, at the Rockingham County Administration Building, E. Gay Street, Harrisonburg, VA. Membership is $30/year and includes a subscription to the magazine Crisis, and new members are always welcome.
